Run a whole soil and rock laboratory in the browser. Enter the readings for twenty-eight tests to AS 1289 / AS 4133 or ASTM, and the studio calculates, checks and interprets every result, classifies each sample, tests the results against each other and published correlations, derives design parameters by geological unit, issues professional A4 test certificates — and passes the results straight to the SPT, pile and borehole studios.
Scope & limitations
For checking, teaching and preliminary interpretation. The current standard governs every laboratory procedure; results must come from calibrated equipment and competent staff, and reports for use in design must be issued and signed by the testing laboratory.
What the geotechnical laboratory studio does
Set up the boreholes, geological units and samples, tick the tests on each sample and enter the readings: every test has its Australian Standard and ASTM method, and the code switch changes the method references, classification boundaries and standard loads.
Index and classification: moisture, density and phase relations, particle density, sieve and hydrometer grading, Atterberg limits with linear shrinkage, shrinkage limit, Emerson / crumb / double-hydrometer dispersion and organic content, classified to AS 1726-2017, USCS (ASTM D2487) and AASHTO M 145 with the group index.
Compaction and strength: standard and modified compaction with oversize correction and zero air voids, sand replacement, nuclear and Hilf field density with density ratio, density index, soaked CBR with swell, unconfined compression, triaxial UU, CU (effective stress paths, Skempton A) and CD, peak and residual direct shear and laboratory vane; consolidation with Cc, Cr, σ′p, OCR, cv by Taylor and Casagrande, Cα, swell pressure, collapse potential and the AS 2870 shrink–swell index; permeability and AS 2159 / ACI 318 aggressivity; rock point load, UCS with E and ν, Brazilian, slake durability and porosity.
Each test gets automatic interpretation and quality checks; across the project, cross-relationships test the results against published correlations (Skempton, Nishida, Sorensen & Okkels, Wroth & Wood, Hazen, Is(50)–UCS and others), consistency checks compare tests on the same sample, and design parameters by unit give mean, spread and characteristic values you can adopt.
Outputs: a complete A4 laboratory report (cover, schedule, registers, a certificate for every test, classification, correlations, profiles, design parameters and an interpretive summary) as PDF, an A3 drawing set, an Excel workbook with live formulas and calculation sheets — and a data hub that sends the results to the SPT studio, the soil layers to the pile studio and the unit parameters to the borehole & strata studio.
