Check concrete block and clay brick masonry to AS 3700. Pick the unit and mortar and the studio derives the masonry strengths, then checks walls in compression with the simplified slenderness method and in out-of-plane bending spanning vertically or horizontally, reinforced walls with grouted cores, in-plane shear walls with overturning, and reinforced block lintels — with coursed elevations, sections with the actions, a 3D view, calculation sheets and Excel.
Scope & limitations
Preliminary masonry design for study and feasibility. Confirm unit and mortar properties with the manufacturer and have the design checked by a qualified structural engineer.
What the Masonry Studio does
Choose a concrete block or clay brick unit and its strength, the mortar and joint thickness; the studio derives f'mb = km √f'uc, the height factor kh and f'm, the flexural tensile and shear strengths, and the bedded area and section modulus for face-shell or full bedding.
Walls are checked in compression by the simplified method with the slenderness ratio and reduction factor for slab or other supports, and in out-of-plane bending spanning vertically (with the precompression from the minimum load) or horizontally between piers and returns. Reinforced walls with grouted cores are checked for bending, shear and minimum steel ratios.
Shear walls are checked for in-plane shear (reinforced or unreinforced) and overturning tension at the ends; reinforced block lintels for bending, shear, bearing and span-to-depth.
Output: coursed elevations, a section with the loads and moment, the unit plan, a 3D view, PDF calculation sheets, A3 drawings and Excel.
